Christmas at Grandma's 2012

Chris's parents came in on Friday, December 21. We did our gender reveal dessert on Friday night. Chris has to work on Saturday morning, and Chris, Ryleigh and I left on Saturday afternoon for California to have Christmas at my Grandma's house. We invited Chris's parents to come with us, but they decided to stay in Phoenix and explore the area. They've decided they would like to move out to Arizona, so it was good for them to get out and get to know the different cities. Plus they kept an eye on our house, were able to receive last minute deliveries, both of which we were thankful for. Sunday Chris and my dad went for a run. The rest of us met downstairs in the hotel for breakfast. Then most of us went to Target for some last minute things, and to tire Ryleigh out. We came back and Ryleigh took a nap, and the rest of us relaxed before heading over to my Grandma's. We had Olive Garden for dinner. Was odd missing some of my cousin's who spent Christmas in North Carolina with their mom. And 2 others were working that night, and only one got off early enough to see before it was time to leave. Since we planned in advance this year (December 28, 2013), maybe everyone can make it in 2013. We did presents in waves this year which seemed to cut back on the chaos - or so it seemed. Ryleigh was up first since she's the only one of that generation.

First up - present from Uncle Bill and Aunt Kim

SOCKS! From Uncle Chris and Soon-to-be Aunt Kristin. They get her socks for every occasion and she loves them! She wears them to bed every night.
From 2012 Winter Nov Dec
They also got her a Ukulele. Apparently, she goes into my dad's "man room" at their house and plays with all his guitars. I think Uncle Chris is hoping Grandpa will teach her how to play.
From 2012 Winter Nov Dec
After her presents, we did family presents while Ryleigh enjoyed some of her gifts. She made Kristin read the Brave book to her as she held Merida, Rapunzel and Belle.

Once the family gifts were handed out and opened, Ryleigh got her big gift from Gigi. She got the American Girl Bitty Twins.

From 2012 Winter Nov Dec
She loves her new twins. She named them her favorite girl and boy names - Miley and Connor. But the girl is still her favorite, because she "doesn't like boys" lol. She even made Connor sleep in the car because she liked Miley better and wanted to sleep with just one.
From 2012 Winter Nov Dec
She also got the accessory set that goes with them complete with carrying bag, outfits, and toys.
From 2012 Winter Nov Dec
After Ryleigh got her present, my grandma got to open hers. Then the kids got to do their white elephant gift exchange. Most of the gifts were stolen multiple times until they were frozen. Big hits - Apples to Apples game, and Hungry Hungry Hippos.

We had a great Christmas at my grandmas. But it was Christmas Eve the next day and time to drive back in time for Christmas Eve Mass and dinner. Busy weekend!

Baby Update

Well it's only been a little over a month since my last baby update.

Took my glucose test. Completely different from my last experience. Last time they had me take the drink at my appointment, then go down to the lab to have blood drawn. I could drink as much water as I wanted - even during the 3 hour Glucose Tolerance Test I had to take last time. This time, no food, no drink (not even water) and you had to sit quiet the entire 1 hour. No walking around. Interesting because I passed this one with flying colors, tons of room to spare. Last time I failed by under 5 points. So good news - no gestational diabetes. That working out and less stress job must be helping!

I'm at every 2 week appointments due to my history of hypertension. My blood pressure has been normal or low this entire pregnancy. It has started to trend up to "normal" (120-130/75-80) in the past few weeks, which is still perfectly normal, but I'm keeping close track of it just in case. I'm measuring small, but baby is measuring big, so as the doctor says I'm "hiding baby well."

First growth ultrasound at the beginning of December showed baby at about 3 pounds, measuring 2-3 weeks ahead on all measurements and in the 70th percentile overall. The growth scan at the end of December showed baby at about 4 pounds, about 1-2 weeks ahead on most measurements and in the 56th percentile.

I'm still going to OMM every 2 weeks, which has really helped with my pelvic and back pain. Also discovered that this new pain I was getting where it was like this shooting pulling stretching pain in my low abdomen was related to scar tissue from my first c-section. But somehow the OMM doc figured out how to make the pain go away. My carpal tunnel has been getting worse the past few weeks. My hand routinely goes numb for most of the morning, every time I drive and just this week - whenever I write. Think I'll have to break out the splints and use them more frequently again.

Still going to Pure Barre - in fact went several times over the holidays. And it feels good to have gone several days in a week. Feel a lot less out of shape, and some things are getting easier. I've also realized a lot of stuff I can't do. Pulling off the barre is even harder for me now due to the carpal tunnel. I don't get many reps in before my hand is going numb. And I've even had to drop down to no weights for the arm section because my hands will go numb holding the weights for that period of time. My belly still has about an inch before it hits the ground during planks. My goal is for it not to hit the ground by the time I deliver :)

Baby still is moving around like crazy. Frequently, looks like a gremlin is trying to escape from my belly. And I've noticed that it's TONS more active than it was even two weeks ago. Baby was breech up until my ultrasound at the beginning of this week. That was the first time they said it was head down, and I could actually feel that it was. Hopefully, it likes that position and stays there...

They finally called to schedule my repeat c-section. So if baby doesn't come sooner - we'll get to meet baby on February 21, 2013. Makes me realize that baby will be here soon!

Here is an ultrasound pic from my first growth scan in early December. The tech was in 2D and noticed baby playing with it's foot, so she switched to 3D. When she did, baby covered it's face and wouldn't move. Top photo is baby's head with the arm across the face. You can make out hte ear, and the left eye. Think it took some tips from it's sister - "when the tech tries to get a picture of your face, cover your face with your arms and don't move!" Bottom left is a profile shot, and bottom right is two feet together.

From Round 2

We had our 3D Ultrasound on December 15. We decided to find out the sex of the baby since Chris and I both had a strong suspicion thanks to all of the ultrasounds I've had. No matter how hard they try to stay away from the area, or if they tell you to look away, as they're scanning around, it's definitely possible to make it out, especially on a breech baby.

Our suspicions were confirmed - It's a BOY!!
From Round 2

This was how he spent the entire ultrasound. He was folded in half in a piked position. His butt was down by my left hip and his head up by my ribs - Frank Breech. His feet and hands were directly in front of his head. I tried to eat some sugary breakfast, and drank some juice on the way, but I noticed he was having a lazy day. He really wasn't moving around much, and he wasn't doing any of his usual morning calisthenics. He was also facing with his back out and his face toward my spine. So the tech had a hard time getting any good photos of him. It was a pretty disappointing 3D.

On the let is his leg, his heel and foot are at the top pointing to the right. Next to that is an arm. And that rounded thing on the right is it's head. You can almost make out an eye by the arm.
From Round 2
On the left is the leg again. Will he have the Steele Calves? Looks possible! In the middle are the hands, you can particularly see the right hand on top, and left fist below that. And it's face is on the right.
From Round 2
From Round 2
He threw his head back at one point and the tech caught this shot and the next one quickly, so it's kinda distorted. Think he was getting pissed at us for poking and prodding him to move. You can see his fist toward the middle, and his face. Fist is right by his right cheek, nose right next to that, lips below that. He's got chubby cheeks just like Ryleigh did.
From Round 2
Grumpy old man face - mouth open.
From Round 2

We wanted to tell our family all together. And since Chris's parents were in town the following week, we tried to get everyone together at the same time before we left for California. Ryleigh knew she was going to have a brother, and we didn't trust her to keep the secret. So after work on Friday, December 21, I came home from work and kicked Linda and Rusty and Ryleigh out of the kitchen to make their "surprise" dessert.  This was their dessert.
From Round 2
My parents came over and everyone bit into the cupcake cones at the same time to reveal blue cupcake. We took a few to California the next day to give to my grandma, my brothers who couldn't make it the night before and my aunt and cousin who were over at my grandma's house. They got a kick out of the reveal too.

We're excited for adventures with a little boy. We have the princesses, dolls, tea parties, and doll houses down. Now for some cars, trucks and action figures. Only 7 more weeks until we get to meet the little guy and see if he really does look like his grumpy old man 3D photo :)

Toddler Christmas Party at MRHS

Every year my mom's school has a "toddler" party. She works at the high school, but the high school has a preschool program there that many of the teacher's kids attend. The toddler party is for the preschool kids, but also for the kids/grandkids of the teachers. They have students who help run activities for the kids - cake walks, cookie decorating, bean bag tosses, coloring stations, face painting, etc. Then at the end of the party they have a parent who dresses up as Santa. This parent is the dad of a girl I went to high school with at that same high school. She has lots of brothers and sisters who have gone there over the years. The parents or grandparents of the kids wrap a present for Santa to hand out to the kids. The kids each get to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they want. Then he gives them their present. The kids love it!

December Whirlwind - Tucson Marathon

After Thanksgiving, Chris went to Las Vegas with his dad and stepmom for a few days. I had to stay home because I had to get back to work. Right after Thanksgiving starts our new quarter, which is always a hectic time. The weekend after Chris got back, it was our 6th Wedding Anniversary. We went out to dinner and then went to see Cirque du Soliel's Dralion at US Airways arena. It was a great show! Don't know if baby liked the music or not, but the loud beat during the show got it kicking up a storm, and when it would quiet down between acts, baby would quiet down too. I've gotten bad about not taking photos of stuff we do without Ryleigh.

The following weekend, December 9, 2012, was the Tucson Marathon in Tucson. Chris, my dad, and my brother, Cory were going to run it. We went down to Tucson on the 8th to go to the expo and for them to pick up their race packets. The host hotel for the race was the El Conquistador Resort in Tucson. We all stayed there. My parents booked a junior suite (or something similar) with a living room and a separate bedroom thinking my brothers could both stay in there if needed since it had a pull out bed. A week or so before the race they got a call asking if it was okay if they upgraded them to a different suite since the one they booked was unavailable. Of course they weren't going to refuse :) Come to find out they got one of the (vice?) presidential suite. And when we checked in, we ended up with the room right across the hall from theirs. So we spent A LOT of time in their room - heck there was plenty of room to spare!

The Tucson Marathon is essentially a downhill race along a single road in Tucson's Oro Valley - Oracle Rd. They make a detour to run down by the observatory, but then come back to Oracle Road. At the end they turn into a subdivision, run behind a shopping center, and finish at a school. The racers had to get to the shuttle location early in order to be driven up to the starting line. The guys left super early - before 5am. They had to catch a shuttle by 5:30am and the race started around 7am. We decided to leave around 8am to drive up to find a spot to see the guys. We tried to aim for around the observatory which was about the half way point for them. It wasn't a far drive about 15 miles, so we figured we'd have plenty of time. Just as we were leaving, we got the message that Cory was at mile 6.1 in 54:36, which is under a 10 minute mile pace. We needed to hurry. Traffic was pretty slow as we climbed up Oracle. We could see the fast half marathon finishers, and even saw the first few marathon finishers as we were driving up the road. There weren't many places to turn off to stop and watch. We found a spot to pull over in this desert parking lot for some trails. And there were highway patrol guys out to help people cross the road so we could get closer to our runners which was nice to see.

Up first is Cory (red shirt by the shoulder) He came up faster than we'd expected. Think there was a little delay between when they crossed the time markers and when we got the texts of their time.

Little wore out, but not too bad. Only one of our crew brave enough to try the full in Vibrams - true minimalist shoes!

The other guys took a while... So long we had to break out the touch and put the kid in time out because she was going stir crazy. The signs came in handy to sit on. This look got lots of smiles and comments from runners. Apparently the glasses on the head with the touch was quite the pick me up for them at mile 14ish.

Here they come!

Chris looks like he's hurting. He had a sinus infection the week before the race. So he was in the middle of his antibiotic cycle during the race. He was definitely exhausted already by this point.
From 2012 Winter Nov Dec
After we saw everyone, we headed back to the car and made the trek toward the finish line. Topher had driven down from Phoenix that morning to see the guys finish. He tried to come up to where we were, but the timing would have been too close, so we told him to stay at the finish area. Around this time, Cory hit mile 17 and started getting calf cramps - he needed salt tablets. My dad had the salt tablets in his Camelbak. It was pretty helpless as we were driving back and we passed my dad and Chris, but we couldn't pull over to get salt tablets from them since we were literally driving off the shoulder due to the detour of traffic. Then we passed Cory knowing he needed the salt tablets, and still couldn't pull over. There wasn't even a fast food restaurant until we were almost to the finish line area. So we told Topher to go find some salt for Cory and some Gatorade, just in case. We got the shopping center where they wanted everyone to park, and we walked to one end where the racers were going to turn to run behind the shopping center in a residential area. At this point they had about 2-3 miles left.

Here's Cory as he's trying to run, and just as he's about to start to get a cramp. Apparently I didn't upload the good face he made mid cramp.

After we saw Cory at this corner, we walked up to the school. On paper it didn't look too far. Come to find out, it was more than a mile from the shopping center to the school. So we decided not to go back and try to see the other two boys at this corner. But we had to walk to quick to try to see Cory at the finish. He crossed right before we got there :(

And somehow he's smiling at the finish. He completed his first marathon having never ran more than 16 miles straight and not having attempted the run/walk before. Way to go Cory!!
6.1 miles - 0:54:36

After he finished, he had to ice his cramping calf. And he decided to sit down, which he shouldn't have. After he got up his whole body started shaking from the pain of the calf cramp as he tried to stretch it to stand. He could barely hobble let alone walk. And when he tried to stretch on the hill we were waiting on his whole body started shaking again. That's one tight calf cramp!

We had a while to wait for the other two. Since the finish was at a school, Ryleigh took advantage of the playground and bossing her uncle around.

Finally, we saw Chris coming. I'd had a talk with Ryleigh and told her that Daddy and Grandpa really needed help finishing the race. So she was going to have to run with them and make sure they made it to the finish line. So when we saw Chris, she knew her job and was ready.

I don't have a good one of them running to the finish, but there is an adorable one of my dad holding Ryleigh at the finish line that the race photographers got. Here's my dad reaching out to take Ryleigh's hand.

12.7 miles - 2:35:53
19.3 miles - 4:06:34
26.2 miles - 5:51:49

After the race, we had the mile plus trek back to the car. We convinced Cory and Chris to take the shuttle bus back to the hotel. Cory could barely walk, and with the sinus infection, Chris was beyond exhausted. My dad walked with us back to the car and we got Subway to take back to the hotel for lunch - again that dining table came in handy! Ryleigh and I took a nap, the boys watched some football and then we went out to dinner at a brewery. The boys deserved a big meal and some beer after all that exercise.

Beautiful sunset over Oro Valley to end the day.
