Colorado Trip - Day 1

June 23, Ryleigh and I flew to Colorado for my best friend, Courtney's baby shower. Such a different experience traveling with a more independent child, who's potty trained (no diaper bag!). Ryleigh had just finished up a lesson block at school talking about transportation. So she was totally stoked for an airplane ride. Chris dropped us off at the airport nice and early. We had some time to watch the planes take off and land before getting ready to board our plane.

See how excited she is!

We went to lunch and then home to let the little bugger take a nap. Courtney teaches at a dance studio. She teaches 3 and 4 year olds on the weekends, while her friend teaches a 3-4 year old pre-ballet and tap class on Thursdays (the day we arrived). Her friend let Ryleigh take a trial class, even though she's not 3 yet. Parent's aren't allowed to watch as it's too distracting for the kids. But the teacher said Ryleigh did great and had a lot of fun. She even liked the tap portion of the class. Apparently a lot of kids get freaked out during that part due to the noise. So now we'll have to consider dance class this fall.
"I like dance class!"

Grilled pizza for dinner was yummy too! Fun filled first day in Denver (okay we were actually in Littleton).

Father's Day 2011

For Father's Day we got Chris his own Kindle, so he could read all the books he's been going through on something bigger and lighter than an iphone. All morning he had fun trying to figure what books to download.

We went over to my parents house for dinner. Chris and Kristen were there too, and Cory's still home for the summer. We had a BBQ and some swimming.

Ryleigh hasn't had swim lessons yet and she's definitely not afraid to jump towards Chris or I off the step when we aren't looking. So we don't trust her without floaties. This is the floaty we had at my parents house. My brothers both used to have similar floaties 20 years ago. This one is a little tight to get into, but does the trick. Just not too fashionable though - but I guess if you combine it with a hat and sunglasses....

Great fun in the sun. I'm pretty sure all the dad's had fun!

Bye Bye Kiddies - let the summer begin!

At school we have 2 classes of students. One class is on campus doing didactic work. At the end of their didactic work, they undergo a bunch of tests to gauge their competency. Then they have a pizza party and get a slide show depicting their year (9 months) on campus. They get awards and rankings based upon their performance on the various tests we put them through. Then we send them out into the big bad world of perfusion - aka. Clinical Rotations.
Here are some of my first year kiddos waiting for the party to start. Most of these were the good ones, who I was actually sad to see leave.
From 2011 June

Then they go out into the big world for clinical rotations for a year where their only means of communication with the home base (aka. campus) is the one or two phone calls, some faxes and emails. These are the second year students. At the end of the second year, they come back to campus right before graduation for some summative evaluations. Basically some of the same tests we gave them right before going out onto their clinical rotations. Last June, I was at Cedars Sinai. I was the chief clinical preceptor for Midwestern students at Cedars. I got sent 2 students. Both were very motivated students. I loved working with them both and I was very sad to leave them last September, but I knew I'd see them again for their graduation. I actually helped Ari get a job at USC too due to some contacts I had. So I was excited to meet the 2nd years who came back on campus and to see my old students again. After their summative evals they get some awards and bragging rights, and then they get a graduation banquet.
Here's my second years who just graduated:
From 2011 June
Taylor - one of my student from Cedars, who got a job offer at UCLA, but ended up taking one in Austin (her hometown) instead.
From 2011 June
Arianna - my favorite student. She rivals me for most pediatric perfusion cases done by a Midwestern student on clinical rotations.
From 2011 June
So proud of both of these girls!!! And so proud of my students out on rotations now! Excited to see them in a year and excited to see what we can do with new fresh meat ;) We don't get the summer off, since we have students who are technically "in class" out on rotations. So we prepare for next year. I'm teaching anatomy, and co-teaching the perfusion technology series (3 classes) as well as coordinating and co-teaching the pediatric congenital defects class again. Should be a fun year!

Wilbur's house - Cory's Graduation

So I guess I never got around to updating our Easter at home photos. Oh well. Life just got busy.

Last weekend (May 13 and 14), my little brother graduated from college with his Bachelors in Civil Engineering. Following in our dad, and brother's footsteps.
From 2011.05 May_Cory Graduation

Cory has given Ryleigh some UofA books in the past few years. One is by Lute Olson about Wilbur going around campus to get to the basketball game. Another is "A is for Arizona" an alphabet book. Ryleigh started asking us if she could go to Wilbur's house. We told her he lived far away, but one day we could go. Well we did go to his house (well Tucson). She was so excited. Not sure what she was expecting, but I'm sure it didn't live up to her expectations lol.

Friday, Chris and I took off work early to drive down to Tucson in time for Cory's Engineering College commencement program. We got down there just in time. It was in Harvill 150. It brought back some memories of senior year physiology classes I had in there at 8am every morning.

While waiting for his name to be called and be personally recognized, he came over to give Ryleigh some hugs.
From 2011.05 May_Cory Graduation

Ryleigh cheering for Cory when his name got called. She was so well behaved for a 2 1/2 year old who didn't feel too well. She woke up from a nap in the car with a fever, but she never lets that stop her. The kids behind us were a different story.
From 2011.05 May_Cory Graduation

After the College ceremony, we went looking for a spot to take pictures. Harvill 150 is essentially in the "basement". So the room opened to this big courtyard, which is nice, but when it's packed with people, not exactly great for taking pictures. So we wandered over toward Old Main and found a nice backdrop for some photos. Ryleigh was hoping to find Wilbur's house. We found some cheerleaders, but no Wilbur. Maybe we'll have to come back for Homecoming so we can find Wilma and Wilbur for Ryleigh. I'm sure we can get a picture with them at Homecoming!

Ryleigh loves her Uncle "Tory"!

The grandma! Our grandmas always try to come to our graduations, and I think they've both come to most of them. I know my Grandma Beam was sad she couldn't make it to Cory's graduation. But she was on the trip of a lifetime touring around Italy, so I know Cory understands :)

Brothers and Sister! Welcome to the college graduate club Cory! Now on to that Master's to keep up with the rest of us! (Can you tell which 2 are UofA grads? We bleed Blue and Red.)

Then we went to the bookstore to find a "Wilbur shirt" (she ended up with a Wilma Shirt and stuffed Wilma to go with her stuffed Wilbur). Man has campus changed. I never got to see the Union without construction. The bookstore has grown too. It's HUGE now! I was wandering around when I found the Greek section - and I found a Theta Nu Xi decal for sale. Something I NEVER thought I'd see. I'm a founder of the Mu Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. at the University of Arizona. We always hoped one day we'd be able to walk into a store and buy stuff with our letters on it, without having to get stuff custom made. So that was SO neat to see that 9 years later, that hope came true :D Just thinking about it makes me so happy, to see that what I started is just expanding it's presence on campus.

After the bookstore we headed to BJs for dinner. Always a yummy dinner there.

Saturday, bright and early was the University's graduation ceremony in McKale center. It started at 9am, which meant we had to get there around 8 to get parking and seats.

Ryleigh's ready for the show to start.

The commencement speaker was Savannah Guthrie. She's a former UofA graduate. She also is a lawyer. She was just named co-host of the Today Show. Her speech was very good - kept our attention. Very light hearted and funny. I think she was the best graduation speaker I've heard. It also helped that she knew some of the inside UofA jokes :)

GO CATS! I'm very proud of my alma mater. So sad that I haven't been back in 8 years! But I definitely want to go back for Homecoming now!
From 2011.05 May_Cory Graduation

After the graduation, we met up with Cory by the Main Library. (Yes, D2, your favorite spot, the ILC is still there!)

Steele family graduates always get leis at their graduation. Carrying on the Hawaiian tradition my dad grew up with. Ryleigh gave Cory his lei, so she had to give him a kiss to go with it. Too sweet!!!

Cory and all his leis.

Congratulations Cory!! We're so proud of you! Now you have a year to finish up that Master's so you can be just like your brother (but you get bragging rights that it didn't take you an extra semester to finish your Bachelor's), since you had to be a Wildcat just like your sister!! Love you Cory!!

Easter - Part 3

We went home so Ryleigh could take a nap. Then Gramma, Grampa and Great Grandma were going to come over for dinner. Cory had to catch a ride back to Tucson, and Chris had to go visit Kristin's family and bring her back to Phoenix, so they missed dinner.

Ryleigh couldn't wait for Grampa to come over to her house. She was waiting for him to come over to play chalk with her.

We had a wonderful Easter! Ryleigh had so much fun!! She got the ultimate sugar high today. She kept slipping candy from the eggs (even in the middle of the hunt she had to stop to eat candy that fell out of one of the eggs into her basket!). She's at such a fun age. Hope everyone had a Happy Easter! We definitely did :)

Easter - Part 2

*Easter Part 1 is on Chris's camara. Hopefully I'll get those off his camera tomorrow and update the blog accordingly :) But here's a preview of the rest of our Easter festivities.

After getting ready for the day, we went to Gramma and Grampa's house for Easter brunch. When we got there, they were still making food, Grampa told Ryleigh to find her Easter basket. So she went on basket hunt #3.
